IMUVa Regulations

Regulations approved by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics at its meeting of 4 April 2016.

The rectoral resolution of 3 December 2012, published in the BOCYL of 19 December 2012, contains the regulations established by the University of Valladolid for the presentation and defence of the Doctoral Thesis. In view of these regulations, this section regulates the different tasks that correspond to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme and which, in general, are prior to the submission of the documentation to the Doctoral Committee of the University of Valladolid.

1) Once the doctoral thesis has been completed, the following documentation shall be submitted to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme:

On the part of the doctoral student: two copies of the thesis, one in bound paper format and the other in electronic format. If submitted in a language other than Spanish, both copies must be accompanied by or include a summary in Spanish containing the objectives, methodology and main results of the work.

From the tutor and the thesis supervisor:

- A reasoned report with their express consent for the presentation of the thesis.

- The proposal of at least three PhD specialists with accredited research experience in the line of research in which the doctoral thesis is framed, together with a brief report on their suitability. These specialists must belong to different research or higher education institutions, all of them external to the University of Valladolid. The proposal must contain at least one specialist from a non-Spanish institution of recognised prestige and, in the case of theses with the title of "International Doctor", all of them must fulfil this condition.

2) Once the documentation has been submitted, within a maximum period of one month the Academic Committee:

- Firstly, it will proceed to the final assessment and certification, where appropriate, of the doctoral student's activity document.

- It will select the two specialists with the profile described in the previous section who will issue the report prior to authorising the reading of the thesis. The Committee may choose other specialists not included among those proposed by the tutor and the supervisor and, in this case, must inform them of its decision.

- It will request the report from the two specialists selected in accordance with the format established by the regulations of the University of Valladolid. The specialists must submit the reports within a maximum period of one month from the date of receipt of the thesis.

- If this has not already been done, a date and time will be set, after hearing the doctoral student, for him/her to present his/her results in the IMUVA/PhD Programme.

- For fifteen days, the thesis will be at the disposal of the academic staff of the Programme, who may submit reports, questions or allegations.

3) Once the reports from the external specialists and any possible allegations presented by the academic staff have been received, the Academic Committee will evaluate whether it is appropriate to proceed with the processing of the thesis. In the negative case, and after a hearing with the PhD student, the tutor and the thesis supervisor, the corresponding reasoned report will be sent to the interested party indicating the shortcomings or deficiencies observed and indicating, where appropriate, the deadline for their correction.

In the event of a positive assessment, the Academic Committee:

- Propose, after hearing the thesis supervisor(s), eight PhDs who may form part of the panel that assesses the thesis, five full members and three substitutes, indicating who is proposed as chairperson and secretary and drawing up the corresponding accreditation of the same. All of this in accordance with the conditions specified (Article 2, sections d) and e)) in the University of Valladolid Regulations mentioned at the beginning.

- He/she will issue the authorisation for the presentation of the thesis to the Doctoral Commission of the University of Valladolid.

From this point onwards, the PhD student may present the corresponding documentation to the UVa Doctoral Commission in order to continue the processing of the thesis in accordance with the terms of the UVA regulations.

All the models of the required documentation can be found in the link: Processing and documents.
